Bitget hack: What the loss of $357 million means for users

Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has been hacked, CEO Gracy Chen announced last night via X. Unauthorized individuals gained access to the company’s hot wallets and stole approximately $357 million.

Bitget initially reported a loss of $351.6 million across various cryptocurrencies. Analysts at Lookonchain later revised this assessment upwards.

“On September 24, 2026, at 8:31 PM, Bitget’s security systems detected unauthorized transfers from some of our hot wallets. Our security team immediately activated emergency protocols,” Chen announced.

Despite the significant loss, Chen stated that the situation is secure. Users need not fear any personal losses, as the company maintains a $464 million security reserve to fully compensate for the damages. However, payouts are currently suspended for all customers.

“Withdrawals remain temporarily suspended while we conduct additional security checks. We will resume them as soon as we are certain it is safe to do so,” Bitget wrote this morning.

Furthermore, the incident was resolved shortly after it was detected yesterday, Thursday, at approximately 8:31 p.m. German time. Bitget’s IT security implemented an emergency procedure to prevent further outflows of funds.

The hack has already been reported to law enforcement and blockchain analysts to enable prosecution and the seizure of the stolen funds. Large portions of Bitget’s reserves are believed to be safe, as they are reportedly held in cold wallets.

These cryptocurrencies were stolen by cybercriminals.

Blockchain analysts at Lookonchain estimate the damage at exactly $356.8 million at the time of the incident, according to the latest information. Nine different cryptocurrencies were stolen by the cybercriminals.

The largest portion initially consisted of XRP – equivalent to 157 million US dollars. Smaller amounts in the form of Ethereum , USDT, USDC, USDT0, Tether Gold, BNB, Avalanche and Tron were also affected.

Some of the stolen coins were exchanged by the hackers for more ETH shortly after being stolen, writes Lookonchain . Bitget is working with security experts from SlowMist and Mandiant, who are already tracking the stolen coins on the various blockchains .

Public information confirms that a six-figure sum in the form of the stablecoin USDC has already been frozen by operator Circle. Similar measures by Tether have not yet been implemented for its three affected tokens – USDT, USDT0, and Tether Gold.

These details are known about the Bitget hack.

Many details about the Bitget hack remain unknown. For example, it is not yet fully clear how unauthorized individuals managed to gain access to the cryptocurrency exchange’s funds.

The cryptocurrency exchange suspects a compromise of its internal systems. According to reports, hackers apparently managed to install malware on Bitget’s systems undetected.

The hackers‘ identities remain hidden. However, some experts suspect the notorious North Korean hacking group Lazarus is behind it. Bitget has already published the same suspicion.

Bitget is a company originally from Singapore that has been providing its services since 2018. Its official headquarters are now located in the Seychelles. According to CoinMarketCap, with a current daily trading volume of $1.1 billion, it ranks among the ten largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world.

The entire loot came from three different hot wallets and one warm wallet, which should actually be under Bitget’s exclusive access.

A final report answering all remaining questions is expected to be published later today.
